BASK - ISKSAA Travelling Fellowship 2015-16

I Deepak Bansal really thankful to Dr. Pushpinder Bajaj and Dr. LalitMaini for having selected me for the ISKSAA – BASK-Fellowship 2015.and Dr Sanjeev Anand for organising our whole fellowship programme, which include free registration BASK annual conference at Liverpool, operative exposure at St. Chapel Allerten Hospital , Leeds ,and free registration for Cadaveric Arthroscopic course at Royal College for surgeons Of England , London . The fellowship was conducted during March- April 2016.

I got the congratulation mail by Dr. Lalit Maini and Dr Pushpinder Bajaj in Nov 2015 , regarding selection for BASK –Fellowship programme. When I came to know the other guy going with me is Shekhar Singal , I was very excited as Shekhar is my best friend and we have done our graduation together . After that we got mail from Dr Sanjeev Anand regarding our fellowship programme dates , Dr Anand helped us in every aspect for arranging visa , hospital accommodation and BASK free registration .

We reached Liverpool on 29 March , Dr Sanjeev Anand had arranged pre conference dinner and meeting of National Ligament Registry, a new Registry programme for ligament reconstructions as National Joint Registry for joint replacements in U.K.. Thereafter we were enrolled for BASK Spring Meet 2016, which was a great experience. We met with Mr. Richard Parkinson, who is the president of BASK , Mr. Tim Wilton president of BOA and attended all the lectures and even a mock trial on medical negligence. A wonderful banquet dinner was organised at Town Hall Liverpool.

After completion of conference we left to Leeds with Dr Sanjeev Anand . Dr Anand took us to hospital accommodation and later on we have dinner with Dr Anand and discussed our whole schedule for rest of days at Chapel Allerten Hospital ,

The next day we reached hospital and were introduced to the hospital staff. The entire team at NHS Chapel Allerten hospital Leeds, were nice and extremely helpful in making us feel comfortable throughout the fellowship period.

Dr. Anand had organised this fellowship program, in a manner, where we could see a wide spectrum of cases being operated, which was a perfect way to spend the fellowship programme effectively.

My interest was more towards observing TKR's and THR's both revision , primary .and knee arthroscopy The best part of the fellowship was the nature and the knowledge of surgeons, even the senior most surgeons were very open to discussions and opinions, learnt about the knee balancing and mid-flexion instability. On Tuesday evening we had a meeting in which various consultants discuses their special and challenging joint replacements cases , During our fellowship period, we were able to clear so many of our doubts with the esteemed faculty at NHS Leeds, and they were all very kind enough to do so.

We also spent half a day at a peripheral clinic, to observe, how out - patients were being managed and treated. We were thoroughly impressed on the diagnosing skills of Dr.Anand . During weekend we had a trip to Scotland which in nearby Leeds..

For last part of our fellowship we left to London for cadaveric arthroscopic knee and shoulder course at royal college of surgeons of England. It’s a two day very well organised course , and learnt a lot about basic but important tips in knee and shoulder arthroscopy , in evening we had a drink at royal college surgeons bar with Dr Anand and rest of course faculty

We had been reimbursed 800 pounds as our travel expense .

I would say BASK fellowship is best among all ISKSAA fellowships. I feel more enlightened and more confident in dealing with orthopaedic problems, after having learnt so much during this fellowship, for which I am once again thankful to team ISKSAA, Dr. Pushpinder Bajaj, Dr Lalit Maini and Dr. SanjeevAnand for providing me with this wonderful opportunity..
