ISKSAA PUNE TRAVELLING FELLOWSHIP 2016 REPORT

PUNE TRAVELLING FELLOWSHIP UNDER DR. ASHISH BABHULKAR

20 NOV 2017 to 03 DEC 2107

First of all I would like to thank Dr. Pushpinder Bajaj, Dr. Lalit Maini, Dr. Ashish Babhulkar and the whole ISKSAA team for providing me with this wonderful opportunity to do a fellowship training under Dr. Ashish Babhulkar in the Department of Shoulder & Sports Injury at DeenanathMangeshkar Hospital in Pune.

I was selected for this travelling fellowship during ISKSAA 2106 conference in Delhi and Dr. Babhulkar was kind enough to accommodate me as per my date request.

I reached the Department of Shoulder and Sports injury in the sprawling campus of DeenanathMangeshkar hospital on 20th November morning and was warmly welcomed by Dr. Babhulkar and his team. Apart from 4 OPD rooms, there was a Sports Injury Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation block and a USG room where instant USG was done to confirm the diagnosis as well as to perform USG guided interventions.

Dr. Babhulkar has alternate day OPD and OT schedule. OPD on an average has 70-80 patients and in OT 6-8 cases are posted in a day.

Each patient record is very well maintained electronically and academic classes and presentations are held regularly. Lot of stress is also given on academic research and publications.

In OPD I learned about history taking, shoulder examination protocol, how to read shoulder MRI and how to arrive at a diagnosis. I also observed the Pune Shoulder Rehabilitation Program (PSRP) in the physiotherapy department.

In OT I had the opportunity to see around 10 reverse shoulder replacements, 2 proximal humerus ORIF and around 20 arthroscopy procedures which included rotator cuff repair, bankarts repair, suprascapular nerve decompression at both the notches, superior capsular reconstruction for massive cuff repair, calcific tendinitis surgery and arthroscopic latarjet.

Dr. Babhulkar very patiently answered all my queries and cleared doubts in OPD and OT. He also explained the steps of surgery and ensured constant involvement in surgery.

Special thanks to Dr. Babhulkar for taking me and his team for an exclusive Maharashtian lunch. It was a great afternoon discussing Maharashtra history, culture, cuisines and places of historical interest to visit in and around pune.

At last I would like to thank again ISKSAA and Dr. Ashish Babhulkar for this enriching experience and this whole experience has changed my approach towards shoulder examination, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation.
