ISKSAA BASK UK TRAVELLING FELLOWSHIP 2026

Report: Observership under Dr. Nicholas Wallwork at Sportsmed, Adelaide, Australia

I, Lakshay Garg, would like to express my sincere gratitude to Dr. Pushpinder Bajaj and Dr. Lalit Maini for selecting me for the BASK UK Fellowship. It has been a privilege to be a part of this esteemed program, and I am honoured to present my report.

The fellowship commenced with my arrival at Glasgow International Airport for the BASK Annual Conference held in April 2026. I had the opportunity to meet my fellowship coordinators—Mr. Sanjeev Anand, Mr. Chinmay Gupte, and Mr. Rahul Bhattacharya.

The two-day conference was highly informative and academically enriching, comprising a series of insightful lectures and hands-on sessions using bone models. Demonstrations of advanced robotic systems, including MAKO, Velys, and ROSA, further enhanced the learning experience. I was also honoured to attend the conference dinner at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Glasgow.

Week 1 – Glasgow
Following the conference, I spent my first week in Glasgow. I attended Ross Hall Hospital with Mr. Rahul Bhattacharya, where I observed multiple elective surgical procedures, including cases of multiligamentous knee injuries and patellar tendon internal bracing. I also attended outpatient clinics, interacted with patients, and gained valuable insights into clinical evaluation and management.

I had detailed and productive discussions with Mr. Bhattacharya both intraoperatively and postoperatively, and he was extremely generous in addressing all my queries. On my final day in Glasgow, we had the opportunity to further discuss my future academic and professional plans at the Lunch.

Week 2 – Leeds
In the second week, I travelled to Leeds, where I attended operating theatres at Nuffield Hospital, Spire Hospital, and Chapel Allerton Hospital (NHS) with Mr. Anand. I observed a wide range of procedures under the guidance of Mr. Sanjeev Anand, Mr. Veysi, and Mr. MacEachern.

The cases included primary and revision hip and knee arthroplasty, robotic-assisted knee surgeries, uncemented knee replacements, soft tissue procedures, and extensor mechanism allografts. Mr. Anand ensured that I received comprehensive exposure to these procedures and provided valuable insights into surgical techniques, preoperative planning, and postoperative management.

During my time in Leeds, I was able to clarify several clinical and surgical queries with the faculty, all of whom were highly supportive and approachable.

Week 3 – London
In the final week, I travelled to London, where I worked with Mr. Chinmay Gupte. I attended surgical sessions at the Wellington Hospital and St. John & St. Elizabeth Hospital, where I observed numerous cases of multiligamentous knee injuries.

I also attended outpatient clinics, where I interacted with patients and participated in clinical examinations. It was a privilege to observe the exceptional surgical expertise of Mr. Gupte, whose precision and skill were truly inspiring.

During my free time, I had the opportunity to explore parts of London, which further enriched my overall experience.

Overall, the fellowship was an enriching and academically rewarding experience. It provided me with exposure to advanced surgical techniques and the opportunity to learn from highly esteemed surgeons.

I would like to once again express my heartfelt gratitude to ISKSAA, Dr. Pushpinder Bajaj, and Dr. Lalit Maini for providing me with this invaluable opportunity. I am confident that the knowledge and skills gained during this fellowship will enable me to deliver higher standards of patient care and further refine my surgical practice.
