ISKSAA SPORTSMED ADELAIDE TRAVELLING FELLOWSHIP 2026
Report: Observership under Dr. Nicholas Wallwork at Sportsmed, Adelaide, Australia
The ISKSAA Travelling Fellowship provided a comprehensive two-week observership under Dr. Nicholas Wall work, a pioneer in Upper Limb Surgery at Sportsmed in Adelaide, Australia. This program covered all major aspects of Upper Limb Surgery, including Hand and Wrist procedures, with hands-on exposure to management of trauma, instability, arthritis, AVN, elective hand surgery, and more.
Dr. Wallwork, Chief Fellowship Supervisor and Department Head at Sportsmed, offered invaluable guidance on principles of specialized surgery in Shoulder, Elbow, and Hand Surgery. Participants attended clinics and theatre sessions across 2-3 hospitals in Adelaide, observing patients in both public and private sectors. Prior to arrival, Dr. Wallwork assisted with journey planning and departmental introductions, facilitating networking and knowledge sharing. Key focus areas included proficiency in diagnosing Shoulder conditions and surgical skills in Shoulder arthroscopy, with cases specifically lined up to align with fellows' interests—even arranged during his absence.
The structure ensured in-depth understanding of upper limb pathologies, from arthroscopic rotator cuff and instability repairs to arthritis surgery, joint replacements, fracture management, and compressive neuropathies.
Dr. Wallwork exemplified discipline, meticulousness, and slick expertise in his work. Renowned for his hospitality, he ensured fellows' comfort, respectfully guiding patient management while sharing insights. Beyond academics, he took fellows around town for recreational activities, and visit to Cleland national park.
Complementing the rigorous schedule, fellows enjoyed exploring Adelaide’s vibrant culture and attractions, blending professional growth with enriching leisure.
This well-organized opportunity, commended for the efforts of the ISKSAA and Australian teams, significantly enhanced clinical orthopaedics expertise, particularly in Shoulder arthroscopy. The exceptional hospitality and academic depth make this fellowship highly recommendable for surgeons seeking to broaden their skills.
